Microsoft has officially rolled out its new AI-powered Windows Search to the general public, starting with Qualcomm-powered PCs. This marks the culmination of months and years of development as well as how users interact with their devices, leveraging advanced AI capabilities to make finding files, photos, and settings faster and more intuitive than ever before.
The updated Windows Search introduces semantic indexing alongside traditional lexical indexing, enabling users to search using natural language prompts. This means you no longer need to remember exact file names or keywords. Instead, you can type phrases like “summer vacation photos” or “budget spreadsheet” to locate what you need. The AI-powered search works seamlessly across File Explorer, the taskbar search bar, and the Settings app, offering a unified and smarter search experience.
One of the standout features is its ability to find local files and photos stored on OneDrive by simply describing their content. For example, typing “sunset at the beach” will surface relevant images, even if you don’t recall the file name. Additionally, the search bar in the Settings app can now surface specific settings by interpreting natural language queries like “change my wallpaper.”
This enhanced search experience is optimized for Qualcomm-powered PCs, utilizing the Neural Processing Units (NPUs) built into these devices. The NPUs enable on-device AI processing, ensuring that the search functionality works even without an internet connection. This not only enhances speed and reliability but also addresses privacy concerns by keeping data processing local to the device.
Gradual Rollout and Future Plans
The AI-powered Windows Search is part of the latest optional update for Windows 11 version 24H2. While it’s currently exclusive to Qualcomm-powered PCs, Microsoft has confirmed that support for AMD and Intel-powered PCs is on the horizon. The rollout will be gradual, with additional features and broader compatibility expected in future updates.
This update underscores Microsoft’s commitment to integrating AI into everyday computing tasks, making devices more intuitive and user-friendly. By harnessing the power of AI, Windows Search is evolving from a basic utility into a sophisticated tool that adapts to the way users think and communicate.
As this feature becomes more widely available, it’s poised to redefine how we interact with our PCs, setting a new standard for efficiency and convenience in personal computing.
