Amazon introduces new AI features with new Fire HD tablets

We’ve known for a while that Amazon has been working on its own AI models for its cloud products. It looks like they are ready to drop some of those features in on their consumer devices. Today, Amazon announced an improved Fire HD 8 lineup with special pricing that lasts through October 9th. Some devices start at just $54.99. The new tablets come with 50 percent more RAM than previous models, a microSD card slot for storage expansion, and a 5MP front-facing camera if those camera videos are your thing.

Amazon claims 13 hours of battery life on the new models, so it is not an all-day battery yet. Amazon is also updating the Kids and Pro editions with more RAM. The Kid’s editions do come with Disney Cases.

Amazon’s generative AI is also being dropped on these new devices, likely the main reason for the upgraded RAM. Three features are being highlighted here at the start and will roll out to compatible tablets later this month. While these devices aren’t to the level of Samsung and Apple, they are perfect for someone who needs a low-cost, versatile tablet for everyday tasks such as browsing, media, or light gaming. Take a look below for a brief rundown of the new AI features.

  • Webpage Summaries, with Amazon’s Silk browser, will allow quick summaries of webpage articles.
  • Wallpaper Creator will allow you to change your device’s wallpaper using text-based prompts.
  • Writing Assist allows you to update your message while typing with a special keyboard shortcut and will work with any app on your device.
