Google has taken the wraps off Android 17, bringing a wave of productivity and entertainment upgrades to the Pixel lineup, starting today, with more Android phones joining in later this year. Select high-end devices will also get Gemini Intelligence later this summer, making the devices more proactive in your everyday tasks.
Android 17 introduces Bubbles, a new way to turn any app into a floating, resizeable window just by long-pressing the app icon. Perfect for notes, maps, tutorials, or live sports without losing your place. On large screen devices, bubbles sit in a dedicated bar at the bottom of the display for quick switching back and forth.
Screen recording and annotation get a redesigned toolbar, but the standout addition is Screen Reactions. You can now record your selfie camera and your screen at the same time, letting you add commentary over apps and websites without a green screen.
Foldables are getting a major gaming upgrade with a new 50/50-optimized layout, featuring gameplay on the top half and a virtual gamepad on the bottom half. Android 17 has also added a memory cleanup feature to help reduce frame drops in high-definition games. External controller users can also map their controller to the virtual controller for a more customized setup.
Enhanced Security and safety controls haven’t been left out of the updates. Protections for precise app location, selective contact sharing, an enhanced mark as lost most for your locks and biometrics, improved theft detection, and advanced protection for high-end users.
Other enhancements include hiding app names on your home screen, enhanced parental controls, a dedicated volume for your AI assistant, and app memory limits to keep those runaway apps under control.
Android 17 is more about quality-of-life updates across the ecosystem with smoother multitasking, better gaming, and stronger security, a solid foundation for an Android AI hybrid workflow.
