Apple brings the compute units with the M5 MacBook Pro

The major silicon leap is here in a world dominated by high-speed computing and AI models. Apple has brought the power to the new MacBook Pro, powered by the M5 and M5 Pro chips. The M5 models use a dual-die “Fusion Architecture” that bonds two 3mm dies into one package.

The Fusion Architecture allows for an 18-core CPU with 6 super cores and 12 efficiency cores. Making the M5 series up to 30 percent faster in a multithreaded workload. The M5 is up to 2.5 times faster than the original M1 Pro Max chips. GPU cores have also been upgraded, with 20 in the Pro model and 40 in the M5 Max. The new Neural Accelerator is integrated into every GPU core, maximizing performance with 4X higher AI compute in the Pro and Max lineups.

Unified memory limits have also been increased in the M5 lineup, with a 64GB maximum on the M5 Pro, up from the 48GB limit on the M4 Pro. The M5 Max can push a full 128GB of unified memory. The new modem comes with the N1 wireless chip to power Bluetooth 6 and Wi-Fi 7, and to upgrade from Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3. Full Thunderbolt 5 support for eGPU addons and high-speed storage.

Up to 24 hours of battery life, a 12MP Center Stage camera, a six-speaker spatial audio system, and a Liquid Retina Display round out the feature set. Colors are still Space Black and Silver for the Pro lineup.

Preorders open tomorrow, March 4th, with availability on March 11th.
