Apple’s “Awe Dropping” Event: What to Expect on September 9

Apple has officially announced its next major hardware event, set for September 9th at 10 a.m. PT, under the tagline “Awe Dropping.” As expected, the spotlight will be on the iPhone 17 lineup, with strong indications that Apple will introduce a brand-new model: the ultra-thin iPhone 17 Air. This device is rumored to replace the Plus variant and push the boundaries of smartphone design with a profile under 6mm thick. Alongside it, we’ll likely see the standard iPhone 17, the Pro, and Pro Max models, all expected to feature upgraded A19 chips, enhanced camera systems, and a more durable aluminum build. The Pro models, in particular, may debut a redesigned rear camera array and a 48MP telephoto lens capable of up to 8x optical zoom.

The event is also shaping up to be a significant moment for Apple’s wearables. All three tiers of the Apple Watch, Series 11, Ultra 3, and SE 3, are expected to receive updates, marking the first time in three years that Apple has refreshed the entire lineup simultaneously. The Ultra 3 may introduce satellite connectivity for emergency use in remote areas, while the SE 3 could see a long-awaited redesign that brings it closer to the capabilities of the flagship models. These updates suggest Apple is doubling down on health and safety features, reinforcing the Watch’s role as a fitness and wellness companion.

AirPods Pro 3 might also make an appearance, though their inclusion is less certain. If they do debut, expect meaningful upgrades like in-ear heart rate monitoring, improved active noise cancellation, and a refined design with shorter stems. There’s also buzz around a new H3 chip and potential support for live translation features, which could further integrate AirPods into Apple’s broader ecosystem of health and accessibility tools.

Notably absent from this event will be updates to the iPad and MacBook lines. Based on Apple’s typical release cadence and industry chatter, a second event later in the fall is likely to focus on these devices. That showcase may include new iPad Pros with OLED displays, refreshed MacBook Pros and Airs powered by the rumored M4 chip, and updates to macOS Tahoe and iPadOS 26. By splitting the announcements, Apple can give each product category its own moment in the spotlight while maintaining a steady drumbeat of news heading into the holiday season.

Apple’s AI efforts, however, continue to lag behind competitors. Internally, executives have even discussed emergency acquisitions of startups like Mistral AI and Perplexity to bolster the company’s generative-AI capabilities, a tacit admission that in-house development hasn’t kept pace with the likes of Google and OpenAI. Meanwhile, features introduced in iOS 18 under the Apple Intelligence banner remain so buggy that some had to be disabled, and there’s little indication these foundational issues will be resolved in time for the September keynote. In short, Apple’s AI roadmap feels bad-hoc and reactive, hardly the polished showcase keynote viewers have come to expect.

While the “Awe Dropping” event will solidify Apple’s mobile and wearable roadmaps, it’s clear that AI won’t be a breakout star this September. Those hoping for an on-device Siri overhaul or headline-grabbing generative-AI tools will likely be left waiting until Apple addresses its architectural fumbling. For now, tune in on September 9 to see where Apple is doubling down, and where it must catch up.
