Bose Levels Up Home Audio with the New Lifestyle Ultra Series

Bose has spent the last few years building a reputation around portability. Ultra Open Earbuds that sit lightly on your ears, tiny speakers that clip to backpacks, and headphones built for commutes and gym sessions. It has been a smart move, especially as the market shifted toward on‑the‑go listening. But today’s launch of the new Lifestyle Ultra Collection feels like a clear signal that Bose wants its home turf back. This is the company that once defined premium home audio, and the new lineup highlights a confident return to form rather than a nostalgia play.

The Lifestyle Ultra Speaker is the clearest example of that shift. It looks like a piece of modern home decor rather than a gadget, with a sculpted silhouette wrapped in textured knit fabric that feels more like furniture than tech. The Driftwood Sand finish even includes a solid white oak base that will patina over time, which is a very un‑Bose detail in the best way. Under the design, though, is a major technical leap. The speaker uses an evolved version of Bose’s Direct Reflecting approach with two front drivers and an up‑firing driver that pushes sound toward ceilings and walls. The result is a wider, more dimensional soundstage than you’d expect from something this compact. CleanBass tech also gives it low‑end presence that older Bose home speakers struggled to achieve without adding bulk.

The Lifestyle Ultra Soundbar is where the company’s home ambitions really show. This is the first major redesign of a Bose soundbar in more than a decade, and it feels like they used that time wisely. The new acoustic architecture packs six full‑range drivers, a center tweeter, and two PhaseGuide drivers that push sound to the sides of the room. It’s built for Dolby Atmos and can create height and width effects without relying on satellite speakers. For older content, TrueSpatial processing fills in the dimensionality so movies and shows still feel immersive. Dialogue clarity has also been reworked with AI‑driven SpeechClarity controls that let you dial in voice levels without flattening the rest of the mix. Compared to previous Bose bars, this one promises deeper bass, cleaner separation, and a more continuous soundstage.

Then there’s the Lifestyle Ultra Subwoofer, which rounds out the system with a clean, curved frame accented by a glass pane. It’s wireless, compact, and built around the same CleanBass and QuietPort engineering found in the speaker and soundbar. The goal is tight, controlled low frequencies that stay clear even at high volume. When paired with the soundbar and two Ultra Speakers, the system can scale all the way to a 7.1.4 setup, which puts Bose directly in the same conversation as Sonos Arc‑based home theaters. The difference is that Bose is leaning heavily into its tuning tech. CustomTune, formerly ADAPTiQ, uses your phone’s microphone to analyze your room and adjust the system automatically. It’s a more modern, streamlined version of what Bose has done for years.

What ties the whole collection together is the ecosystem. Bose finally embraces an open approach with support for Google Cast, Apple AirPlay, and Spotify Connect. You can group these speakers with each other or with speakers from other brands, which is a notable contrast to the more closed ecosystems that have dominated the home audio space. The updated Bose app also simplifies setup with consolidated permissions and guided onboarding, which should make the first‑time experience smoother than older Bose systems.

The Lifestyle Ultra Speaker ($299), Lifestyle Ultra Soundbar ($1,099), and Lifestyle Ultra Subwoofer ($899) all launch on May 15, with preorders open now. The speakers come in Black or White Smoke, with Driftwood Sand available as a limited edition. It’s a lineup that feels like Bose reclaiming its place in the living room, not by repeating the past but by modernizing the formula that made the original Lifestyle systems iconic.
