Microsoft says AI and Copilot should work for you, not the other way around. To help with that, memory has been introduced into Copilot as a new feature that makes it smarter and more tailored to your work style. Memory in Copilot will be able to remember key facts about you, including your preferences, working style, and recurring topics you frequently use.
For now, this works with two functions, Copilot Memory and Custom Instructions. Copilot picks up details from your conversations, for example, what programming language you might prefer. You can also just tell it about the project you’re working on, and it will be a good idea. You can also provide Copilot with Custom Instructions on how it should handle your data, for example, by keeping emails concise or specifying the tone to be used.
With Memory Copilot, Copilot becomes more than just an assistant. It can personalize answers, reduce repeats, and help you complete your task much quicker. You’re always in control; you’ll see subtle prompts of memory updated when Copilot remembers something new. You can access memories to edit, delete, or turn them off completely. Copilot will only remember things with clear intent, such as your preferred programming language.
Memory in Copilot will generally be available in July 2025 and is enabled by default, though users and tenants will have the ability to turn it off.
