Today, Google is announcing its first custom CPU designed for the data center, the Axion. Axion processors combine Google’s silicon expertise with Arm’s highest-performing CPU. Google says arm-based instances come with 50 percent better performance and 60 percent better efficiency.
Under the hood, Axion has Titanium, a purpose-built controller for offloading operations like networking and security. Offloads to Hyperdisk also keep storage performing at its maximum ability.
Google’s announcement of the new Axion CPU marks a significant milestone in delivering custom silicon that is optimized for Google’s infrastructure, and built on our high-performance Arm Neoverse V2 platform. Decades of ecosystem investment, combined with Google’s ongoing innovation and open-source software contributions ensure the best experience for the workloads that matter most to customers running on Arm everywhere.” – Rene Haas, CEO, Arm
Google built these chips to be ready out of the box for its Google Cloud ecosystem for Google Compute Engine, and they are compatible with software from the Google Marketplace. Google has recently launched Arm-based migration services.
