Google ends the Chromecast in favor of Google TV Streamer

Chromecast was a pioneer in the streaming generation. Accessing your favorite apps on your television was a ground-breaking event for its time. Over the past few years, consumers have changed how they watch content, and televisions nowadays come equipped with popular streaming apps out of the box.

Now, consumers expect more from their connected devices, and Google is banking on that with its new Google TV Streamer. The Google TV Streamer has 4GB of RAM, a better processor, 32GB of storage, and full 4K HDR support with Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos. You’ll still be able to access your popular streaming content and services. You can also put the unit in ambient mode which allows you to display your favorite Google Photos, or create new ones using AI, it’s up to you.

Google TV Streamer still allows you to cast content from your smartphone and control your Nest speaker groups right from your TV. A built-in Matter hub and Thread border router will enable you to control your smart home and control lights, cameras, locks, and other smart sensors.

You can preorder the Google TV Streamer from the Google Store and other popular retailers. It’s available in two colors, Hazel and Porcelain, and will cost $99.99 when it arrives on September 24th. For those with the latest generation Chromecast, updates and support will last a little longer. The 4K version support ends in September 2025, and the HD version in September 2027.
