HoloLens Headset production has ended

HaloLens has been walking the plank for a little while now. Today, Microsoft has officially closed the door on the headset, ending production of the HaloLens 2. According to UploadVR, Microsoft says the existing headsets will get updates to address security and software issues through 2027.

If you’ve got the original HaloLens headset, which came out in 2015, support for that model is coming to an end. It ends on December 10th. Microsoft seemed to struggle with the HaloLens after its original release. The HaloLens 2 was a significant upgrade, with a wider field of view and eye tracking.

Microsoft changed direction in 2023, with a shakeup of the HaloLens division when leader Alex Kipman left the company in 2022. This led to Microsoft changing the direction of its hardware division in 2023. HaloLens employees have been impacted by layoffs this year.

We don’t know if we’ll see another AR/VR headset from Microsoft, all we know is Microsoft says they will make another update to the product when it’s something meaningful.
