It’s been tough 18 months to be employed with any major tech company. Over the last 18 months, Google, Microsoft, Meta, and Sony have laid off thousands of employees. Sadly, that’s just a very short list of companies laying off workers; in a press release, CEO Jum Ryan said the layoffs were needed to continue to grow the business.
Ryan said that roughly 900 jobs are expected to be cut worldwide in its PlayStation division. Here’s an excerpt of what was sent to all PlayStation employees today.
After careful consideration and many leadership discussions over several months, it has become clear changes need to be made to continue to grow the business and develop the company. We had to step back, look at our business holistically, and move forward focusing on the long-term sustainability of the company and delivering the best experiences possible for our community. The goal is to streamline our resources to ensure our continued success and ability to deliver experiences gamers and creators have come to expect from us.
First-party games and studios are expected to feel some impact. The 900 jobs being eliminated represent about eight percent of the workforce. Impacted employees are receiving support and severance benefits. These layoffs are said not to be a sign of company strength but rather a restructuring to enable future growth.
