The NFL and Microsoft have agreed to extend their long-standing alliance, this time weaving Microsoft Copilot and Azure AI deep into football operations alongside upgraded Surface hardware. The deal builds on a partnership that dates back to 2013 and follows a previous renewal in 2020, aiming to bring real-time AI insights to coaches, scouts, broadcast teams, and front-office staff across the league.
Since swapping printed, black-and-white play sheets for custom Surface tablets on the sidelines, Microsoft has deployed more than 2,000 Surface devices and nearly 200 Windows servers across 30 NFL stadiums. Those tablets have been instrumental in replay reviews, play diagrams, and team communications, transforming how teams prepare during games.
Copilot and Azure AI Drive Next-Gen Insights
At the heart of the new extension is integration with Microsoft Copilot and Azure AI:
- The NFL Combine App now features a Copilot-powered AI assistant that lets scouts pose natural-language queries about player statistics and historical benchmarks, slashing analysis time from hours to seconds.
- Broadcast and analytics teams will tap Azure AI for automated highlight generation, real-time game storyboards, and predictive player performance models.
- Front offices across all 32 teams gain access to Copilot in Microsoft 365 for tasks such as crafting marketing plans, drafting social media campaigns, and accelerating scouting reports, all within familiar Office apps.
Surface Hardware Upgrades on the Field
To support AI-driven workflows, Microsoft is rolling out its latest Surface Copilot+ PCs on the sidelines. These rugged, performance-tuned devices leverage Intel’s newest chips and enhanced thermal designs, ensuring seamless Copilot interactions under stadium lighting and in variable weather conditions.

What’s New in Surface Copilot+
- Intel Lunar Lake processors for faster AI model handling
- Improved battery life and quick-charge capabilities
- Weatherproof enclosures and glove-friendly touchscreens
- Integrated AI key that launches Copilot prompts in a single tap
“It’s going to revolutionize how teams work on the sidelines and across the organization,” said Bryson Gordon, corporate vice president of global media & partnerships at Microsoft. “Bringing Copilot and Azure AI into every stage—from draft prep to game-day strategy—means faster decisions and deeper insights.”
Seattle Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald added, “Earlier information is better. Having AI-driven data at our fingertips speeds up assessments and lets us focus on execution rather than spreadsheets.”
As AI and cloud services layer atop proven hardware, teams can expect:
- Quicker tactical adjustments informed by live data streams
- Enhanced fan experiences through AI-powered commentary and interactive stats
- Streamlined operations from scouting rooms to marketing departments
As the NFL season unfolds, the true yardage gained from this AI infusion will become clear, but the question remains: will Aaron Rodgers feel bad for throwing Surface tablets now that they can think?
