With built-in access to Phi 4-mini, the Prompt API, Writing Assistance APIs, and an upcoming Translator API, Microsoft’s Edge browser is evolving into one that not only displays content but actively enhances it with AI-driven capabilities.
AI APIs in Microsoft Edge: What’s New?
Microsoft Edge now offers on-device AI processing, allowing developers to offload high-frequency AI tasks without relying on cloud-based models. This means faster results, better privacy, and reduced costs for developers working with sensitive data or regulated industries.
Phi 4-mini: AI Built into Edge
Edge now includes Phi 4-mini, a compact AI model optimized for efficiency and performance. With 3.8 billion parameters, Phi 4-mini excels at tasks like math problem-solving, text generation, and content summarization. Developers can tap into this model directly from their web apps, eliminating the need for external AI services.

Prompt API: Smarter AI Interactions
The Prompt API, now available in Edge Canary and Dev previews, allows developers to integrate AI-powered prompt engineering into their applications. This API enables websites and extensions to interact with Phi 4-mini for text analysis, classification, and sentiment evaluation.
Writing Assistance APIs: AI-Powered Content Creation
Edge now includes Writing Assistance APIs, which help developers integrate AI-driven text generation, summarization, and editing into their web applications. Whether refining user-generated content or assisting with writing tasks, these APIs streamline AI-powered workflows.
Microsoft is set to launch a Translator API in Edge, enabling AI-driven text translation directly within the browser. This feature will allow users to translate content without relying on cloud-based services, ensuring privacy and efficiency.
One of the biggest advantages of these new APIs is the ability to offload repetitive AI tasks. Instead of sending data to external AI models, developers can now process AI workloads locally within Edge, reducing latency and improving security.
All of these AI APIs are currently available in Edge Canary and Dev channels, giving developers early access to experiment and integrate them into their applications.
Microsoft is also expanding Copilot Chat in Edge for Business, introducing AI-powered document summarization for Microsoft 365 Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. This feature helps users quickly digest complex information without leaving their workflow.
Additionally, Microsoft 365 Copilot Agents will soon be available in Copilot Chat, automating tasks like lead generation, customer tracking, and sales insights. These agents will launch in early June, making AI-powered automation more accessible.
Web Content Filtering for Schools and Businesses
For IT admins, Edge for Business is introducing web content filtering, allowing organizations to block millions of inappropriate sites with intelligent block lists. This feature, available at no extra cost for Microsoft 365 Education and Business Premium users, ensures a safer browsing experience.
Microsoft Edge is rapidly evolving into an AI-powered browser, offering developers on-device AI processing, smart content creation tools, and enhanced automation. With these new APIs, developers can build faster, smarter, and more efficient web applications while maintaining privacy and security. We’ll just have to wait and see how this translates to browser marketshare or further AI usage.
