Microsoft Expands Handheld Gaming With Default Game Profiles on Ally Device

Microsoft has officially rolled out Default Game Profiles in preview for the ROG Xbox Ally and Ally X, giving handheld gamers smarter performance and battery Earlier this week, Microsoft announced a major update for the ROG Xbox Ally and Ally X handhelds: the release of Default Game Profiles in preview. This new feature is designed to take the guesswork out of performance tuning by automatically balancing frame rate (FPS) and power consumption for supported titles. Instead of manually tweaking settings, players can now enjoy smoother gameplay and longer battery life with profiles tailored to each game.

What Default Game Profiles Do

The introduction of Default Game Profiles marks a shift in how handheld players interact with their devices. Instead of juggling manual settings or worrying about whether they’ve struck the right balance between performance and battery life, the Ally and Ally X now take care of that automatically. Each supported title comes with a tailored profile that adjusts both the frame rate and power draw in real time.

If a game begins to dip below its target frames per second, the system intelligently boosts power to stabilize performance. Conversely, when a title runs above its target, the profile caps the frame rate to conserve energy, extending battery life without sacrificing smoothness.

The benefits of this approach are already clear. In Hollow Knight: Silksong, for example, the new profile delivers nearly an extra hour of playtime compared to the standard Performance mode, all while maintaining a silky 120 frames per second. It’s a practical demonstration of how smart optimization can enhance the handheld experience without forcing players to compromise.

And for those who prefer to stay in control, the profiles aren’t locked in place, they can be toggled on or off directly from the Armoury Crate Command Center widget, giving users the flexibility to decide how they want to play.

At launch, the feature supports forty games, including heavy hitters like Fortnite, Halo: The Master Chief Collection, Sea of Thieves, and the latest entries in Call of Duty. Microsoft has confirmed that more titles will be added over time, ensuring that the library of optimized experiences continues to grow.

At launch, 40 supported games include big names like Fortnite, Gears of War: Reloaded, Halo: The Master Chief Collection, Sea of Thieves, and Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 & 7. More titles will be added over time.

The Default Game Profiles are available now in preview. To access them, customers need to:

  • Install the latest updates for Armoury Crate SE, the Xbox PC app, and Windows 11.
  • Launch a supported game while on battery power—the system will automatically apply the tailored profile.

This rollout is global, meaning all ROG Xbox Ally and Ally X owners can begin testing the feature immediately.

Additional Improvements

Alongside Default Game Profiles, Microsoft also introduced:

  • Faster library loading for large game collections.
  • Improved gamepad response after login.
  • A new Game Gallery filter by Performance Fit, helping players see how well games run on their device.
  • Bug fixes and stability enhancements.

Microsoft isn’t stopping here. Early next year, the ROG Xbox Ally X will debut AI-powered features like Automatic Super Resolution (Auto SR) and highlight reels. Plus, a Game Save Sync Indicator will roll out next week, ensuring players know when their progress has safely synced to the cloud.

If you own an Ally or Ally X, make sure your system is updated, you can start experiencing Default Game Profiles today.
