Microsoft recently announced its new European digital commitments. Unveiled on April 30th, these initiatives aim to strengthen Europe’s digital infrastructure, enhance cybersecurity, and foster economic growth—all while respecting the unique values and laws of the region.
Microsoft’s relationship with Europe dates back over four decades, beginning with the localization of Microsoft Word in German and French. This long-standing partnership has laid the foundation for the company’s latest efforts to support Europe’s digital transformation. As Brad Smith, Microsoft’s Vice Chair and President, emphasized, “Our support for Europe has always been—and always will be—steadfast”.
Microsoft’s announcement outlined five major commitments that reflect its dedication to Europe’s digital future:
- Expanding AI and Cloud Infrastructure: Microsoft plans to increase its European datacenter capacity by 40% over the next two years, with operations spanning 16 countries. By 2027, this expansion will more than double the company’s datacenter footprint, supporting over 200 facilities across the continent.
- Upholding Digital Resilience: In response to geopolitical volatility, Microsoft introduced the European Digital Resilience Commitment. This legally binding promise ensures that the company will contest any government directive to suspend cloud operations in Europe, safeguarding the region’s digital stability.
- Protecting Data Privacy: Building on its EU Data Boundary project, Microsoft offers European customers the ability to store and process data within the EU and EFTA regions. Additional security measures, such as encryption options and lockbox capabilities, further enhance data protection.
- Enhancing Cybersecurity: Microsoft is appointing a new Deputy Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) for Europe to oversee compliance with emerging regulations like the Cyber Resilience Act. This role underscores the company’s commitment to defending Europe against evolving cyber threats.
- Fostering Economic Competitiveness: Microsoft’s Azure AI platform hosts over 1,800 AI models, many of which are open-source. By providing access to these tools, the company empowers European businesses to innovate and thrive in the AI economy.
