Microsoft is doing a lot to push its new AI infused operating system, including a break in its universal code base for Windows as a new exclusive version makes its way to devices that support the Copilot + PC platform.
As Microsoft updates its Support Blog to let readers know the fate of the latest Windows 11 version 24H2 for the Release Preview Channel, the company clarified that build 26100.863 is being seeded to Copilot + PC devices only.
The new latest build of Windows 11 version 24H2 bundles some general Windows improvements alongside some specific tweaks to features only found on devices supporting the requirements for Copilot + PC certification.
Windows 11, version 24H2* includes a range of new features such as the HDR background support, energy saver, Sudo for Windows, Rust in the Windows kernel, support for Wi-Fi 7, voice clarity and more. It also includes many improvements across Windows. For example, we are introducing a scrollable view of the quick settings flyout from the taskbar, the ability to create 7-zip and TAR archives in File Explorer (in addition to ZIP), and improvements for connecting Bluetooth® Low Energy Audio devices.
Windows Insider Program Team
Microsoft’s Windows team is also bundling a kill switch for its flagship Recall search experience in build 26100.863 that will disable the feature from general testing accessibility. Going forward, Microsoft will only allow access to Recall through the Windows Insider program and only to Copilot + PC supported devices.
Unlike the mid-level controversy that accompanied Microsoft’s Windows 11 hardware requirements for upgrading, that were eventually loosened, it looks like going forward there will be at least two versions of the OS that go out the public.
For Windows users that are content with their current hardware, the Windows team seems to be treating them as Windows 10+ users as they deliver subsets of OS updates while Copilot + PC users get the full list of feature and improvements for Windows 11 going forward.
