Microsoft is phasing out its education-focused Windows 11 SE, with support officially ending in October 2026. This marks the end of another attempt by the software giant to compete with Google’s ChromeOS in the K-8 school market. While a good idea on paper, the execution of Windows 11 SE ultimately fell short.
The Promise: A “Cloud-First” Windows for Schools
Launched in late 2021, Windows 11 SE was designed to be a streamlined, secure, and “cloud-first” operating system for low-cost laptops. The goal was to provide a simplified, distraction-free environment for students, with a curated list of essential education apps like Microsoft Office, Teams, and Minecraft: Education Edition.
On paper, this was a direct answer to the success of Chromebooks, which had gained significant traction in schools due to their affordability and simple, web-based interface. Windows 11 SE was Microsoft’s attempt to offer a similar experience, with the added benefit of the familiar Windows ecosystem and robust management tools for IT administrators.
Despite its good intentions, Windows 11 SE failed to gain the traction Microsoft had hoped for. The very features designed to make it a streamlined experience for students ended up being its biggest limitations.
The most significant issue was the restricted app installation. Unlike a full version of Windows, users couldn’t install just any application. They were limited to a Microsoft-approved list, and getting any new software approved was a cumbersome process for school IT departments. This “walled garden” approach, while intended to keep students safe and focused, was a major source of frustration.
Furthermore, Windows 11 SE was, at its core, still Windows 11. This meant it struggled to run efficiently on the low-cost hardware common in schools, a market where the lightweight ChromeOS excelled. The result was an operating system that was often sluggish and less responsive than its main competitor.
Finally, the user experience itself felt a bit too restrictive for a platform with “Windows” in its name. Apps opening in full-screen by default and reduced multitasking capabilities created a user experience that felt more like a tablet than a PC, which may have been a step too far for users accustomed to the flexibility of traditional Windows.
Microsoft has officially confirmed that support for Windows 11 SE will end in October 2026. The operating system will not receive any further feature updates, and security patches will cease after that date. This leaves schools and students who adopted the platform with the need to transition to a different version of Windows 11 to ensure continued security and support.
This move marks another chapter in Microsoft’s ongoing struggle to find a successful formula to compete with Chromebooks in the education market, a battle that, for now, it seems to have conceded.
