Microsoft is working on a unified Teams Client for macOS and Windows

Part of the problem with using Microsoft Teams on macOS and Windows is that there are two separate versions of the app. There’s the version that comes shipped in Windows 11 which supports consumer personal Microsoft accounts, and the work and school version, too. Switching between them is troublesome since you’ll need two apps at the same time. Well, it looks like Microsoft has heard those pains, and according to a listing in the Microsoft 365 roadmap, is finally working on a unified Teams client.

Listed with feature ID 383006, Microsoft was pretty vague about what you can expect with this unified Teams Client. The company simply remarked that “Microsoft Teams on Windows and Mac will support every type of Teams account (work, school or personal) in a single desktop application.” Microsoft added this to the roadmap, which lists upcoming and in-progress features, back on February 15. General availability and Rollout Start is scheduled for April

What this means for the inbox Teams account in Windows 11, and the separate Teams for work and school accounts is unknown. It’s probably likely that the recently redesigned Teams for Work and School Teams app on Windows and macOS might pick up support for personal accounts, but that’s just an educated guess. Microsoft mentions “a single desktop app for all user types,” so it could be a new app, too.
