Microsoft has officially announced a significant update to its collaboration platform, introducing a fully threaded conversation experience for Microsoft Teams channels. The update, detailed in a recent company blog post, directly addresses one of the most persistent user requests and aims to bring greater order and clarity to the fast-paced digital discussions common in modern workplaces.
For years, the single-stream-of-consciousness format of Teams channels could lead to convoluted and overlapping discussions, making it difficult for users to follow specific topics. This latest architectural shift allows users to reply directly to any message, creating a distinct, indented thread. The move is positioned as a major step toward enhancing productivity by decluttering the main channel view and preserving the context of individual conversations.
According to the announcement, the new channel experience is built around several key features designed to streamline communication workflows:
- Focused Conversation Threads: The core of the update is the ability to create a dedicated thread for any message. This isolates in-depth discussions, preventing them from disrupting the primary channel feed and allowing team members to engage with specific topics more efficiently.
- Notification Management via “Follow”: To combat notification overload, a “follow” feature is being introduced. Users will automatically follow threads they create, reply to, or are mentioned in, but they can also manually follow or unfollow conversations. This gives users granular control over which discussions they are alerted to.
- Consolidated “Followed Threads” View: A new, dedicated view will aggregate all followed threads into a single, interactive list. This feature is designed to allow users to quickly catch up and respond to relevant discussions without needing to hunt through various channels.
- Bridging Threads and the Main Channel: While threads are designed to contain detailed discussions, Microsoft has included a function to send a summary or key update from a thread back to the main channel. This ensures that important decisions and outcomes remain visible to the entire team.
- Flexible Layout Options: Team administrators will have the ability to choose between the new threaded layout and the traditional post format when setting up a channel. Microsoft has confirmed this setting can be altered later without any data loss.

The update also ensures full integration with the existing Teams ecosystem. Apps, bots, and channel meetings will all function within the new threaded structure. Channel meetings, for instance, will automatically generate their own thread to house all related content, such as recordings and files.
This new threaded conversation experience is currently available in public preview and is slated for a full rollout across all platforms, including desktop, mobile, iOS, and Android.
