The header and footer are essential to the user experience in SharePoint, providing navigation, branding, and a cohesive site structure. To meet modern design standards and user expectations, Microsoft has released a refreshed and more customizable visual experience for the SharePoint site header and footer.
This update empowers site owners with greater control over visuals and layout, while giving site viewers a cleaner, more immersive browsing experience.
Key Features for Site Owners
- Background Image Support: You can now set an image as the background for your header or footer and apply customizable overlay colors. This feature is supported across all layout types and can be configured under the ‘Change the Look’ header design tab.

- Font Customization: Choose from a set of predefined font families to style your site title, navigation links, and footer links. This helps you better align your site with your organization’s brand identity.

- Flexible Footer Alignment: New support for left-aligned footers provides more layout flexibility to suit various design needs.
Enhancements for Site Viewers
- Cleaner, Immersive Experience: The command bar is now hidden in view mode, offering a cleaner look for readers.
These updates will roll out beginning in late August 2025 and will be completed by mid-September 2025. No admin action is required for this rollout. For more details on configuration, you can refer to Microsoft’s official documentation on how to change the look of your SharePoint site.
