Microsoft test a new ad-free version of Skype across platforms

Microsoft introduced an ad-supported version of its communication platform Skype back in 2012, but after twelve years, it looks like the company is gearing up to reverse course and reintroduce an ad-free version of the tool soon.

In the latest Skype update, version 8.1257.76.201, Insider users can get their hands on a variant of the chat app that brings an updated AI-powered image generation feature, enhanced UI improvements, better navigation, improved image expansion, an optimized menu flow, more consistent margins, alongside the removal of ads across all platforms.

While Microsoft doesn’t go into great detail about its ad-supported reversal, it does champion the move as a highlighted bullet point in its Skyper Insider Release Notes:

🔔 Farewell to Ads in Skype Channels and Beyond 🚀✨

We’re excited to announce that Skype is now ad-free! Our latest update removes all ads from Skype channels and the entire Skype platform, ensuring a smoother, decluttered and more enjoyable user experience.

  • Ad-Free Channels: Enjoy uninterrupted browsing and communication in all your favorite Skype channels. 🛡️
  • Seamless Conversations: Focus on your chats without any ad distractions, making your Skype experience cleaner and more user-friendly. 💬
  • User-Centric Design: We’ve prioritized your feedback to create a more streamlined and pleasant environment across all platforms. 🌐

Thank you for your continued support as we strive to make Skype the best communication tool for everyone. Enjoy an ad-free experience and keep the conversations flowing! 📞✨

The Skype team also highlights improvements to the OneAuth sign for the chat platform that includes Unified Sign-ins that replace the older version of the company’s OneAuth sign-in system for both Skype and Microsoft Teams. The improvement means there will be less emphasis on passwords, especially if a user’s is already signed into another Microsoft account enabled product.

As with most updates, the Skype team touts a handful of fixes that also come down the pipe with version 8.1257.76.201 that includes allowing users to send media when connected to a 5G network. Yes, that apparently users were unable to send media when connected to the latest bandwidth technology. Another was a fix addressing answering calls on iOS when ringtones were heard.

Head over to the Microsoft Store or the Skype app to grab the latest update if you’re Insider to experience the good ol’ days of an ad free service again.
