Microsoft test further AI features with Windows Notepad and Paint apps

Microsoft continues to find corners to stuff its pre-generative artificial intelligence features into and this week it equals more improvements for Windows Paint and Notepad.

While Microsoft’s Paint app (version 11.2410.28.0) has steadily improved over the past year and half with pro-level additions such as layers and pre-generative Image creation, this week the company introduced another AI enhancement in the form of Generative Fill. The new Generative Fill option does what its name implies and allows users on Snapdragon led Copilot + PCs to use text-to-image as tool for creating backgrounds or object specific illustrations without flattening the original art.

On the other side of the coin, Paint will also get Generative Erase that will remove objects from images, but instead of leaving a blank white space, users will now see pre-generative technology fill in the area with a background that matches the rest of the art.

Microsoft Paint’s new Generative Erase and Fill functions in very similar fashion to the paid subscription options in Adobe Photoshop.

Over in Notepad land, version 11.2410.15.0 is getting updated with Rewrite which allows users to get an in-app editor that operates similar functionality as the older version of Copilot with pre-generative options to edit text with differences in tone, format, and length. Rewrite offers users three variations on highlighted text, and users can refresh themselves for even more pre-generative options if they don’t find the original options sufficient.

Unfortunately, Microsoft is only offering these new features for testing in select areas that include Canada, France, Germany, Italy, and the US through the Canary and Dev Channels for Windows Insiders.

In addition to being selective about the regions and preview channels these new features it rolls out to; Microsoft is also locking Generative Fill and Erase to Qualcomm-only powered Copilot + PCs while Rewrite stands alone independent of chip selection.
