Microsoft to launch mobile online store in July

After over a year of talking about it, Xbox President Sarah Bond told Bloomberg today that the Xbox mobile online store is coming in July. The Xbox store is expected to be an alternative to the Apple and Google store and their app fees. The store will initially launch as a web-based store offering Microsoft’s games and discounts for in-game content.

Microsoft chose to launch the store on the web versus an app to make the store accessible across all devices. Microsoft wants the store to be ecosystem-independent. The goal is to make gaming available across all devices. For now, Apple and Google have dominated the online store space but charge developers fees of up to 30 percent per purchase.

Microsoft plans to open its store to other publishers in the future, though no date has been given.
