Ah, the tech world. Just when you thought the jargon couldn’t get any more convoluted, Microsoft steps in with their brand new, shiny toy: the Core AI Platform and Tools. Because, apparently, “more AI” was the solution to all our problems.
So, what’s this Core thing all about? Well, if you’ve ever felt that the current AI tools were just too simple and intuitive, fear not! Core is here to complicate things just the way you like it. It’s a suite of AI tools that promise to do everything from transforming industries to cooking your breakfast (okay, maybe not that last part, but give them time).
According to Microsoft, Core is all about empowering developers, data scientists, and businesses. Because, clearly, they’ve been languishing without the ability to harness the true potential of AI. Forget the existing AI platforms that were “good enough.” Core is here to revolutionize the revolution.
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella makes clear that CoreAI is focused on building agentic applications ‘with memory, entitlements, and action space’ that will also leverage its future language model.
This new division will bring together Dev Div, AI Platform, and some key teams from the Office of the CTO (AI Supercomputer, AI Agentic Runtimes, and Engineering Thrive), with the mission to build the end-to-end Copilot & AI stack for both our first-party and third-party customers to build and run AI apps and agents. This group will also build out GitHub Copilot, thus having a tight feedback loop between the leading AI-first product and the AI platform to motivate the stack and its roadmap.

The announcement is peppered with the usual buzzwords: innovation, transformation, scalability. You know, the stuff that makes you feel warm and fuzzy inside, even though you’re not entirely sure what it means. Microsoft’s CTO, in his infinite wisdom, claims that Core will “bridge the gap between ambition and achievement.” Because, obviously, the lack of a Core AI platform was the only thing standing between you and your dreams.
It should be noted that CoreAI is a much farther reaching goal from Microsoft than its current AI efforts as it targets AIG, and as Nadella eluded to, agentic intelligence is the goal which is a much more automated ambition.
Agentic intelligence refers to AI systems that can autonomously set goals, plan, and execute tasks without constant human oversight. These AI agents can independently solve complex, multi-step problems by learning from their experiences and adapting over time.
Achieving agentic intelligence first would be vital for Microsoft as it would give the company a significant competitive edge, positioning it as a leader in the AI industry. Agentic AI’s ability to autonomously set goals, plan, and execute tasks without constant human oversight would open up new possibilities for innovation across various sectors. This capability could streamline operations, increase efficiency, and enhance customer experiences by providing more intelligent and adaptable solutions. Additionally, it would help Microsoft expand into new markets and industries, leveraging these advanced AI systems to solve unique challenges, ultimately unlocking a plethora of opportunities for growth and transformation.
As for the hierarchical structure of the new platform, in case you’re looking for a potential fall guy if this project oversteps on personal privacy or craters Microsoft’s financials’, Ja Parikh is in charge as EVP of CoreAI with Eric Boyd, Jason Taylor, Julia Liuson, and Tim Bozarth sharing various support roles.
Jay will work closely with Scott, Rajesh, Charlie, Mustafa, and Kevin to optimize our entire tech stack for both performance and efficiency. Additionally, Jay and team will lead our progress and work around developer productivity and Engineering Thrive across the company.

For those concerned about ethical implications, Microsoft assures us that Core is built with “responsible AI principles” in mind. Phew! Because if there’s one thing we need, it’s more companies preaching ethics while doing who-knows-what behind the scenes.
In summary, Core is Microsoft’s latest attempt to convince us that we need more AI in our lives. It’s a platform that promises the moon but will probably just deliver slightly more efficient machine learning models. So, get ready to jump on the bandwagon, because the Core hype train is leaving the station.
