Microsoft has rolled out a new firmware update for its Snapdragon X-based Copilot+ PCs, the Surface Laptop 7 and Surface Pro 11. This August 2025 update is a welcome one, introducing a highly requested battery-charging feature, along with a number of important fixes and driver updates that enhance security, reliability, and performance.
The most significant new addition is a powerful new battery-charging feature, now available directly within the Surface app. Previously, users of these devices were limited to a “smart charging” feature that would automatically limit charging to 80% when a device was plugged in for extended periods. While helpful, it lacked manual control.
This update changes that, giving users three new options to manage their battery health and longevity:
- Smart Charging: The existing adaptive feature that automatically manages charging based on usage patterns.
- Limit to 80%: A new manual option that allows you to cap your battery’s charge at 80%. This is ideal for users who keep their device plugged in most of the time, as it helps to reduce battery aging.
- Charge to 100%: This allows you to temporarily override the charge limit when you know you’ll need the full battery capacity for a long period away from a power outlet.
This new level of control, which was previously a key feature of other Surface models, is a significant improvement for the Surface Laptop 7 and Surface Pro 11, moving the settings from a restrictive UEFI option to a user-friendly toggle in the Surface app.
Stability and Performance Upgrades
Beyond the new battery feature, the firmware update also includes a host of other improvements:
- Security: Addresses potential security vulnerabilities to protect the system from insecure states.
- Reliability: Fixes issues that caused unexpected shutdowns, particularly those related to the monitor display and post-update installations.
- Display Fixes: Resolves an issue that caused the screen backlight to flash when the device was used at the lowest brightness setting.
- Driver Updates: The update also includes new driver versions for a wide range of components, many from Qualcomm, to ensure optimal performance and compatibility.
These updates are a crucial step in Microsoft’s ongoing support for its latest Surface devices, ensuring they remain secure, reliable, and performant. To get the update, simply head to Windows Update in your Settings and check for available updates.
