Plex fans might not be happy with the latest updates

Plex has announced it will have much to say about updates and the newest features of its popular multimedia access software this year. First up is the Plex Pass Price increase. Starting April 29th, the price of the Plex Pass will increase. In their release, Plex reminds fans that they have kept pricing the same for the past 10 years. The new pricing applies to new and existing subscribers unless you’re a Lifetime Member. Before the price increase, you can still purchase a Lifetime Membership for $119.99.

The new pricing as if April 29,2025 will be $6.99/month, $69.99/year and Lifetime is $249.99.

Remote Playback is also getting some adjustments. First, let’s define it: Remote playback is playing media in a remote location outside of the local network. Users who have an active PlexPass are not impacted.

IMPORTANT NOTE FOR CURRENT PLEX PASS HOLDERS:
For users who have an active Plex Pass subscription, remote playback will continue to be available to you without interruption from any Plex Media Server, after these changes go into effect. When running your own Plex Media Server as a subscriber, other users to whom you have granted access can also stream from the server (whether local or remote), without ANY additional charge—not even a mobile activation fee. More on that later in this update.

On April 29th, you’ll have two ways to access your Plex content remotely. The first is upgrading any PlexPass subscription. The second option is the new Remote Watch Pass, which allows any individual to stream from any personal media server they have access to. This option is recommended for those who don’t own a Plex Server. Starting April 29th the Remote Watch pass will be available for an introductory cost of $1.99/month or $19.99/year.

A positive of these changes is that there will be no more Mobile Unlock Fees. Previously, watching content for more than one minute required a fee. With the new app updates, playing content on a local network will be free.
