Seagate introduces a 4TB Xbox expansion card that will shake your wallet

By now, we all know that you can only play your Xbox games from designated Xbox-compatible storage. That doesn’t stop you from attaching an external hard drive to your console to store your games and then copying them to your Xbox storage when you want to play them. With many games exceeding one hundred gigabytes, even the 1TB and 2TB internal storage on the Xbox Series X can seem insufficient for hardcore gamers.

Until today, you only had the option to purchase an external storage card from Seagate or Western Digital, with capacities up to 2TB. Today, the biggest offering to date appeared on the Best Buy website: a 4TB expansion card for an eye-watering $429. If it makes you feel any better, Best Buy does say that’s $70 off. If you’re wondering why the card is so expensive compared to other storage mediums, the card is a PCIe Gen 4 x 2 that is based on CFExpress technology. This is the same storage you might find in high-end (and super expensive) digital cameras. It is made to be portable, rugged, and plug-and-play. Jus3t to give you some idea, the Xbox Series X currently comes in at $549 when on retail pricing.

Our favorite titles continue to grow in storage requirements. The Xbox Series X|S doesn’t offer any user-replaceable internal storage, unlike the PlayStation 5. For now, if you want all your titles on tap without waiting to copy themfrom external storage, you’ll just have to keep paying a storage premium.
