Sony State of Play: 60 minutes of fun coming to gamers this year

Sony and Sony PlayStation publishers kicked 2026 off with a bang, highlighting 60-plus minutes today, highlighting major first-party updates, some third-party surprises, and several shadow drops that set the tone for the event. The headliners were the God of War Trilogy, an official full remake, and a nostalgia win for those old enough to remember it. Sons of Sparta was the big shadow drop that launched today, a 2D side-scrolling prequel.

Kena returns in Scars of Kosmora, which opened the show as a visually stunning sequel to Kena: Bridge of Spirits. Kena travels to the island of Kosmora to confront new corruption, reconnect with a figure from her past, and master a form of Spirit Guilding. Konami celebrated the return of Castlevania with the 40th-anniversary edition of Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse, hitting shelves later this year.

In an untitled game created by Lionsgate and director Chris Staheiski, John Wick returns to gaming with a story set in the Wick timeline. No release date or further details on this one, so we’ll have to wait and see what John Wick has in store for us. Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Volume 2 was confirmed as the next entry in the series, as part of the series’ launch on August 27th, 2005, which included Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker, and Metal Gear Solid: Ghosts

Death Standing 2: On the Beach is a PC release from Kojima Productions coming March 19th. Bease of Reincarnation is a Game Freak-produced action-adventure featuring a special bond between a dog and its owner. Look for the release to be August 4th, 2026. The Legacy of Kain franchise will receive its next update next month, with Legacy of Kain: Defiance Remastered on March 3rd and Legacy of Kain: Ascendance on March 31.

Bungie, the popular makers of Halo, come back with a PvPvE extraction shooter, and Rayman: 30th Anniversary Edition returns tomorrow, bringing it back from the 90s, and a 50-minute documentary will accompany the release.

Sony and its publishers have arrived in 2026, delivering high-quality releases and a few surprises. This Sony State of Play was one of the better events in recent memory, featuring the God of War trilogy remake, a new John Wick Game, and the next Metal Gear installment.
