Six years after its dramatic reveal, State of Decay 3 is finally letting players get their hands on it, or at least on a carefully curated slice of it. Undead Labs has opened sign-ups for the game’s long awaited alpha playtest, which marks the first substantial public update in years and gives fans a chance to help shape the next chapter of the zombie survival series.
The studio’s renewed transparency comes with a surprisingly candid tone. Brant Fitzgerald, art director and franchise co-creator, explained that while much of the team had been tied up supporting State of Decay 2, the rest had been “creating cool [shit]” for the third entry. He also emphasized that the community has been central to the game’s evolution, saying, “It became clear that community is survival, and we need your help.” That philosophy is built directly into the playtest itself, which will feature four player co-op, new base building and resource strategies, and what Fitzgerald described as “a whole lot of combat.”
The first wave of alpha tests begins in May 2026, starting on PC, with additional testing windows planned throughout the year. Undead Labs stresses that this initial group will be limited, but more opportunities are coming. Missing the first round is not the end of the world, even if the world of State of Decay is literally ending.
Getting in is straightforward, although demand is high. Fans can sign up through the official State of Decay website, where they will be asked to connect an email and Discord account before completing a short questionnaire. Slots are not guaranteed, and the studio notes that only players who complete the survey will be considered. The surge of interest has already overwhelmed parts of the registration flow, but persistence pays off, or at least gets your name into the pool.
For longtime followers, this moment feels like a turning point. After years of sporadic updates, shifting priorities, and plenty of speculation, Undead Labs is finally inviting players back into the fold. With the Xbox Games Showcase on the horizon, there is a sense that this alpha is not just a test. It feels like the beginning of State of Decay 3 stepping into the light again.
