Xbox is marking its 25th anniversary this week at the Game Developers Conference 2026, and it is looking forward to welcoming 5,000 gaming developers to the building to announce more details about the next iteration of the Xbox platform, Project Helix.
Microsoft has confirmed Project Helix is deep in development and designed to play both console and PC games, all while delivering a major leap in performance. Powered again by a custom-designed AMD SoC and codesigned with AMD for the next version of DirectX and FSR, expect a large leap in ray tracing, with AI integration directly in the pipeline. Higher efficiency, scalability, and fidelity for more immersive experiences.
Xbox is working to unify the PC and Xbox gaming experience with a more consistent interface, simpler cross-development options for developers, and a lower development cost for studios. Developers can expect to get their hands on dev kits in 2027. Project Helix will also be able to play previous-generation titles.
Before we get to 2027, though, gamers have a lot to look forward to: the return of Halo, a new Gears of War, third-party blockbusters with highly anticipated titles like Crimson Desert. The next 25 years begin now. Xbox Play Anywhere has 500 development teams participating, with upwards of 1,500 games available. PC integration marks a new direction for Xbox, with a renewed commitment to accessibility. Xbox is setting the stage for a standout 2026 and a breakout 2027.
